2016 Ford Explorer

This SUV was originally introduced in 1990 and so far, we have seen five generations. In first four generations Ford Explorer was a mid-size SUV. In 2010, fifth-generation model came and it brought many significant changes. Instead of traditional body-on-frame, Explorer moved to modern unibody structure and became a full-size crossover. It moved to Ford’s D4 platform, which is also used for models such as Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT. This model is still in production and it is expected that 2016 Ford Explorer will come as refreshed model, with several modifications.

The 2016 Ford Explorer will come as refreshed model. It has been already presented on 2014 LA Auto Show and it features many interesting novelties. When it is about exterior look, there are modifications both on the front and rear end. Front end comes with redesigned front fascia, hood and lower bumper. There are new grille, new headlights inspired by new F-150 and lowered front bumper with additional air intakes. LED headlights and fog lights are optional. On the rear, 2016 Ford Explorer will feature redesigned LED tail lamps and new dual exhaust.

On the other side, interior is expected to remain in the same style with just some minor modifications. Company will introduce new Platinum model which will be new top trim. Some of highlight features will be front and rear cameras, enhanced active park assist with perpendicular park assist, park-out assist and semi-automatic parallel parking, hands-free liftgate and many other.

2016 Ford Explorer engine

The engine line-up will come with one additional unit. It will be 2.3 liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine, same that is used for new Mustang. Beside this engine, 2016 Ford Explorer will be available with pair of 3.5 liter engines. The first one is Duratec V6, which outputs 290 horses, while the other one is twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost which delivers 360 horses and it is available only for AWD models. All Explorer models use 6-speed automatic transmission, which delivers power to either front or all wheels.

2016 Ford Explorer release date and price

The 2016 Ford Explorer has been already presented on 2014 LA Auto Show and it is expected to come late this year. Although it isn’t officially confirmed, refreshed model should keep the same price, which is around 31.000 dollars for base model. Models that are seen as main competitors are Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot and Acura MDX.
